This is similar to the previous trick, but this time the contact should be with your cat’s nose rather than paw—which means you can eventually teach her to move an object (if it’s very light) over a small distance. It’s quite an easy one to teach, but that varies depending on how nudge-y or rubby your cat is naturally.

How to start

You need a small plastic bowl or cup that is light enough for your cat to move and that you can place a treat underneath without the object falling over. Sit in front of your cat.

How to do

• Place the object in front of your cat and then show her you are putting a treat underneath it. Say “nudge.” Hopefully she will nudge at the cup to get the treat. If she does then say “good” and uncover the treat right away by tilting the cup or bowl away from her so she can get it.

• Do this again, hopefully building the strength of the nudge as you go. If your cat uses her feet at all, make sure she doesn’t get the treat this way, but only for nudging with her nose.

• Once you feel your cat is really understanding the trick, then you can stop putting the treat under the cup and just ask her to nudge it—and then you can reward her with a treat afterwards. You can then swap in any object, so long as it’s light enough for your cat to move.

Tip

If she’s finding nudging over the object too difficult, then balance the edge of the cup or bowl on a pen or something similar to make it easier for her—this will also keep her enthusiasm up and stop her from getting frustrated.
